I’ve hosted my share of dinner parties both large ones like Thanksgiving and smaller ones with two girlfriends. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the list of things you need to do but I’ve come up with a few tips to make it easier so that you can actually enjoy the dinner with your guests.
While the food is cooking, I like to set the table. I love simple and rustic place mats like these from Sur la Table and white plates from Crate & Barrel. The pinot noir glasses are from Bed Bath Beyond and the cutlery is from Horchow.
I like low floral arrangements so that everyone can see each other. I don’t want floral arrangements to block conversations and be in the way of the food. I do love to introduce flowers that people might not see everyday like these kale flowers which are very rustic.
An hour before the guests arrive, I set out the appetizers or cheese plate. My boyfriend is really good at setting the ambiance, that’s usually his job. He dims the lights, lights the fire and starts the playlist. It really gets your guests in the mood. I also change into my dinner outfit at this time.
I like to have all of the food ready by the time the first guest arrives so that I only have to warm things up. Unless I’m frying something. When the first guest arrives, we pour them a drink and start the festivities!
