When It’s Cold Outside

When it’s cold outside, it’s so easy to just sit inside and be a potato.  These are the things I do when it’s cold outside…

1. Bikram Yoga

I hate working out in the winter.  I have no motivation what-so-ever but knowing that I’ll be in a hot room, destressing, and stretching makes me want to go to yoga.  I go to the Midtown studio.  The teachers are so helpful and warm.  It really feels like a community.  They say it’s not exercise but more of a meditation of your mind…it does however burn 900-1200 calories in 90 minutes.  Afterwards,  I always feel amazing and I treat my body well with eating clean and drinking veggie juices.

2. Hudson Hotel Library Bar

The Hudson Hotel Library Bar is my favorite place to get a drink.  I always feel like I’m in the library in Beauty and the Beast.  The best part is it’s only 2 blocks from my apartment.  There’s a cozy fireplace and a pool table and for some reason, people ask me if I’m the black widow.

3. Spa Castle

I’ve been to one of these spas in Korea but Spa Castle in Queens is colossal.  It’s 5 floors with saunas, massage rooms, lounge, bade pools (hot water immersion and Asian acupressure), exfoliation, fitness center, and food courts.  It’s like an amusement park.  You have to at least visit the website to see the pictures of this place.  I am already planning a trip in February.

4. Frick Collection

This place is stunning.  For some reason it’s never crowded like the MET.

5.  Brooklyn Bowl

It’s part bowling, part live show venue, and the food is from Blue Ribbon…need I say more?

6. Sul Long Tang at Gahm Mi Oak

Sul long tang is an ox-bone broth based soup with beef brisket, rice and noodles.  You add scallions and sea salt to your taste.  It’s such a comfort food for me because it reminds me of my childhood.  Gahm Mi Oak is open 24/7 so you will oftentimes see the night life crowd in the wee hours of the morning, probably because sul long tang is said to cure hangovers.  The kimchi is also really really good.

7. Brooklyn Flea

I wrote about the Brooklyn Flea this past Fall in its last weekend outside (read here).  The Brooklyn Flea has an indoor Winter home that’s worth checking out.

8. Take a Class

I love taking cooking classes at the Institute of Culinary Education.  It’s a great way to learn how to make dishes in a cuisine you are unfamiliar with.  I took a Brazilian cooking class and LOVED IT.  I took the class with Chef Leticia and what was once an intimidating cuisine seemed very approachable.  I’m obsessed with pão de queijo (cheese bread).

I also took sewing classes at The Sewing Studio.  I took the beginner’s basics class that was 2 hours and by the end I made a zippered toiletry bag.  Honestly, the hardest thing was threading the machine.  It was so rewarding to actually make something that I kept jumping up and down and smiling.  Our teacher was so patient and nice.  I am definitely going to take more classes.

Me and 2 of my girlfriends went to a BYOB painting class at Paint Along.  We bought a coupon for $22 from Popsugar and with wine in tow, we painted along with the teacher.  It’s more for beginners but it was so much fun seeing how everyone has a different interpretation of the same painting and how they paint it (right Flan?).  It’s a great girl’s night that’s a departure from the bar.
