Finding a brunch spot on the weekends can be a daunting task. There are so many things to consider like the location, the type of food, how long you’re willing to wait, and coordinating with your party to all arrive at the same time so they’ll seat you right away. It gets even more complicated when you’re trying to find the most unique brunch for a special occasion because let’s face it, brunch is really just eggs and sandwiches. For my mom’s 60th birthday, I wanted to take her to a special brunch and I thought Dovetail was the perfect place.
Dovetail is this hidden gem on the same corner as Shake Shake on the Upper West Side. You might pass it if you don’t pay attention. Once you enter through the door and curtains, don’t let the elegant white table clothed tables make you nervous. The service at Dovetail was impeccable. Everyone from the hostess to the food runners were so gracious they made us feel like we were the most important table at the restaurant. The food is modern American made with farm fresh seasonal ingredients with a fun twist.
Dovetail’s brunch is a 3 course $32 prix fixe menu that starts with sweet and savory breads that are so good you need to eat carbs for this. Next, canapés for the table, an entree and ending with dessert. The plating of each dish was exquisite, like a work of art. Then, every single ingredient had a burst of flavor so pronounced that you knew it was included in the dish with fierce intention. I appreciated the fact that each course was paced so that we could digest the prior course and have time to talk and enjoy each other’s company. This is a rare luxury in the world of new york city brunches. Taking into account the food, ambiance, service and price, this has to be the best brunch deal in the city.
It was such a special brunch that it’s marked in my memory as one of my top 5 in the city. I’m excited to go back to try their dinner menu.
