New Year’s Weekend

{Morning walk by the ocean}

{New Years at the Ritz Carlton}

{Happy New Year}

Ft Lauderdale is an easy weekend beach getaway.  It’s only a 2 hour flight from Laguardia Airport and it’s much calmer than Miami.  When you need a quick sunny and warm weather fix like me, it’s perfect.  I end up going there almost every year.  After a chilly and snowy Christmas, we decided to sun it up in Ft. Lauderdale for New Years.  Ft. Lauderdale has definitely changed since the last time I was there in 2009. It’s starting to resemble parts of South Beach. There are more beachfront resorts like the Ritz Carlton and the W hotel and the crowd is looking more like the Spring breaker type.  We stayed at the Westin Resort and Spa which was right on the beach and we went running every morning by the ocean.  On New Years Eve, we braved the tumultuous waters to go diving.  The crew at the Sea Experience were so friendly and helpful, it was the perfect way to end 2010.  Later that night, we sat at the bar in the Wine Room at the Ritz Carlton.  They served yummy bar snacks like sliders, oysters, and cheese and it was much more relaxing than the main dining room.  It was also more affordable, the main dining room menu was $150 a person!!  When I travel, my favorite thing to do is go out to the local restaurants.  I have to be honest, I wasn’t as excited because there weren’t that many options during my last visit.  Like I said before, a lot has changed in 1 year.  Our hotel concierge recommended Asia Bay which was a fusion of Japanese, sushi, and Thai, they had really yummy and creative rolls.  La Bonne Crepe had the yummiest savory crepes.  We had the gruyere cheese with mushrooms, fennel sausage and bechamel.  Just a short walk from our hotel, we discovered Casablanca Cafe.  Because they offered everything you could possibly image, we ate there for lunch and dinner.  For dinner, I had an amazing salmon while my boyfriend had kalbi style duck.  Every meal must end with dessert!  I’ve been going to Kilwin’s for 10 years.  They make their own waffle cones.  When you walk in, you are hypnotized by the aroma.  They had fun ice cream flavors like blueberry waffle cone.  Kilwin’s is located on the prettiest strip called Las Olas which means the waves in Spanish.  There are dozens of restaurants and art galleries where you can pop in and out while eating your ice cream.  I was really happy with the dining experience on this trip.  We got to go diving, exercise, go to the beach, eat at great restaurants, it was the perfect little getaway.
