Around the Block

Block Island is a small island 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island and 14 miles East of Montauk Point.  Allie, my neighbor growing up, asked my sister and I if we wanted to go to Block Island for her birthday.  Everything about the trip was effortless.  It was an hour and 45 minute drive to New London, Ct from the Bronx (our meeting point) and an hour ferry ride.  Once we got off the ferry, we rented bikes in Old Harbor.  The island is just under 10 square miles so the best mode of transportation is a bike.  When we were riding the bikes around the island, it felt like old times.  It reminded me of when we were young riding our bikes on our block in New City, NY.  We were convinced that we were the Goonies.  We biked from the Southeast lighthouse to the Northeast lighthouse which is probably the most I’ve biked that didn’t include a Soulcycle class.  Block Island blew my mind.  The beaches were some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen my share.  I loved Mohegan Bluffs with its rocky coast line and big waves.  It’s a haven for surfers.  I also loved the Northern tip of the island which is largely protected as a natural conservancy.  If you like biking and beaches, you have to go to Block Island.  You will have no trouble finding your inner kid around the block.
